Recipe Card: Sourdough Sandwich Bread
Ingredients
- 1 cup (200g) active sourdough starter
- 1 cup (240g) warm milk
- 3 tbsp (40g) softened butter or olive oil
- 2 tbsp (25g) sugar or honey
- 3 ½ cups (420g) bread flour
- 1 ½ tsp fine sea salt
Instructions
- Feed the Starter
Make sure your sourdough starter is active, bubbly, and ready to bake. - Mix the Dough
Combine the starter, warm milk, butter, and sugar in a bowl. Add the flour and salt. Mix until a shaggy dough forms. - Knead
Knead by hand for 8–10 minutes or in a mixer for 5–6 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic. - Bulk Fermentation
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise 4–6 hours at room temperature (or overnight in the refrigerator) until doubled. - Shape the Loaf
Press the dough into a rectangle, roll tightly like a jelly roll, and place into a greased loaf pan. - Final Rise
Let the dough rise until it crowns just above the pan usually 1–3 hours depending on temperature. - Bake
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 35–40 minutes until golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 190°F (88°C). - Cool Completely
Allow the loaf to cool before slicing for the softest crumb.
Perfect for Meal Prep and Everyday Use
One of the biggest advantages of sourdough sandwich bread is how versatile it is. The crumb is tender yet sturdy, ideal for slicing thin or thick. It freezes beautifully, toasts perfectly, and works for everything from French toast to sandwich melts. Because it’s naturally leavened, it develops richer aromas and a deeper wheat flavor compared to commercial yeast bread.
Conclusion
Sourdough sandwich bread blends the best of both worlds: the comfort of soft, classic sandwich bread and the rich, natural flavor of sourdough. Whether you’re an experienced baker or just starting your sourdough journey, this loaf delivers dependable results and everyday usefulness. Make it part of your weekly rotation and enjoy homemade bread that truly tastes and feels special.

Does this recipe still work without the sugar?
Looking forward to trying this recipe.
This recipe has 0 reviews and I don’t know what made me try it. I am quite new at sourdough, less than 3 months, I dare not make anything else beside the basic sourdough bread and a sandwich bread, so far I haven’t found a nice sandwich bread recipe, but I decided to try this one, made it yesterday and baked it today. Method was beyond simple, I was very sceptical but I preserved and baked it. It did have to stay longer on the room temperature before baking, I had it on the counter for at least 4-5 hours before it was properly risen. The result is amazing, so soft and milky, i love it! If anyone ever hesitates to try this recipe, I hope they see my comment, it’s amazing and simple 🙂
Are you sure the oven temperature is 375? Because the bread was not even close to being done..still dough.
Love this bread!. It’s definitely my go-to for our weekly sandwich bread.
